Following the strong earthquake of Gorkha, Nepal that occurred in Nepal
on April 25th, 2015, a team from the Faculty of Engineering of
University of Oporto, in collaboration with other international
institutions, visited some of the more affected areas
in the capital region of Kathmandu. The main objectives of the
visit were to characterize the construction typologies mostly
used in Nepal, and collect data from affected buildings
involving unreinforced masonry walls and masonry infilled
                reinforced concrete frames. The observations
indicated improvements needed in structural design and
allowed comparisons with similar construction practices
in other parts of the world.
